Anson Street, located just north of Broad Street in Charleston’s historic district, is a quiet yet architecturally significant area that embodies the city’s antebellum heritage. The street's homes, constructed between the Great Fire of 1838 and the onset of the Civil War, feature refined Regency and Greek Revival architectural details, such as symmetrical facades, columned porticos, and decorative cornices. These styles reflect the prosperity and aspirations of Charleston's middle and upper classes during the mid-19th century. Despite being situated outside the more frequently celebrated South of Broad area, Anson Street has been recognized for its historic and architectural value. Historic Charleston Foundation has played a key role in this neighborhood’s preservation through advocating for restoration efforts and placing important easements on historic homes, ensuring the survival of this pocket of Charleston’s rich cultural landscape.
